    X-ray positioning sponges serve two key, connected purposes in radiology: improving patient comfort and ensuring diagnostic accuracy. Technicians use them to achieve correct anatomical alignment during imaging procedures and reduce patient movement, minimizing the need for retakes. 

     

    These radiology positioning aids are appropriate for a wide range of procedures as they come in various shapes and sizes, including wedges, blocks, rectangles, and even multi-angle supports.

  • What's the difference between coated and closed-cell positioning sponges?

    Coated X-ray sponges and closed-cell positioning sponges are two of the most common options used by radiology departments. Of the two, closed-cell positioning sponges, a more modern innovation than their coated counterparts, offer several advantages. Closed-cell positioning sponges are entirely radiolucent, artifact-free, and inherently non-porous. They’re also more durable, easier to clean, and better at maintaining their shape.

     

    While these are both types of radiolucent positioning sponges (meaning they don’t interfere with imaging), the closed-cell variety offers improved artifact reduction. Even at relatively low Kv, they will not appear on X-ray images, meaning you can expect to see clear images with minimal distortion or shadowing.

  • Do positioning sponges show up on X-ray images?

    The best X-ray positioning sponges are designed to be as radiolucent as possible; modern closed-cell varieties offer 100% radiolucence and maximal artifact reduction. Since X-rays can pass through them without creating significant shadows or evidence or artifacts, the best positioning sponges reduce (or even eliminate) the need for repeat exposures.

     

    That being said, while some of the older, coated-type positioning sponges can consistently produce relatively clear images, closed-cell sponges are more reliable in their complete radiolucence.

    The easiest types of sponges to clean and disinfect are made of fluid-resistant, non-porous materials, making coated and closed-cell foam types ideal. It’s best to avoid non-foam closed-cell sponges, since their porous material can harbor harmful bacteria.
