Bacteria and/or Fungal Growth

Your swab showed microbial growth on your X-ray protective garment. This is common in busy clinical environments, but it signals that current cleaning practices may not be fully eliminating contamination. It may be putting your team and patients at risk for HAIs.
No Growth

Your swab did not show detectable microbial growth. That is a strong indicator that your day-to-day cleaning practices are working. However, a clean swab does not guarantee the absence of biofilm or contamination in other areas. Just like brushing your teeth daily does not replace a dental cleaning, routine wipe-downs should be paired with periodic professional deep cleaning to maintain long-term protection.
What to do with your results?
Your swab results are more than a snapshot, they are a decision point. Whether microbial growth was detected or not, this is an opportunity to strengthen your cleaning protocols, protect your team, and align with manufacturer care instructions.
Share the Results
Share your findings with your team, infection prevention, and leadership. Use this as a conversation starter about cleaning frequency, storage practices, and compliance expectations.
Review Manufacturer IFUs
If microbial growth was detected, this is exactly why manufacturers require routine deep cleaning in their Instructions for Use. Daily wipes are maintenance, not remediation. Deep cleaning helps remove biofilm and contamination that routine surface disinfection cannot eliminate.
Take Action
If your results raised concerns, schedule a professional deep cleaning or consultation. Even if no growth was detected, periodic professional cleaning helps maintain protection, extend garment life, and support Joint Commission compliance.
